Root canal treatment under a microscope: does it hurt
10.10.2026 · 5 min read
Root canal treatment under a microscope frightens many patients, although in fact it is the most precise and safest way to save a tooth. We explain whether it hurts, when a microscope is really needed and how much such treatment costs in Irpin.
Does root canal treatment under a microscope hurt
No. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so the patient does not feel the cleaning of the canals itself. The microscope does not add pain - on the contrary, it helps the doctor work more precisely and injure the tissues around the tooth less. After the visit, short-term sensitivity is possible, and it passes within a few days.
When a microscope is needed
A microscope is not needed in every case, but there are situations where the risk of complications grows without it:
- complex canal anatomy and additional canals;
- retreatment after a failed filling;
- remnants of broken instruments in the canal;
- perforations of the tooth walls and the search for cracks.
In such cases, treatment is carried out by an endodontist. Read more about all types of intervention on the endodontics page.
How treatment under a microscope goes
Treatment takes one or two visits. First the doctor takes a diagnostic X-ray and determines the number of canals, then, under up to 40x magnification, cleans them of infected tissues, treats them with solutions and hermetically fills them with a modern material. A control X-ray confirms that the canals are filled tightly, without voids.
Root canal retreatment
Sometimes a tooth has already been treated, but the pain has returned, the tooth has darkened or an X-ray shows inflammation near the root. Then retreatment is needed: the old filling material is removed, the canals are cleaned again and filled tightly. Under a microscope this is done especially carefully, because the canals have already been altered by the previous intervention. Retreatment is more difficult than primary treatment, so it is important that it is performed by an experienced doctor.
Prices for root canal treatment under a microscope
At Sorridi the price is calculated per canal. Estimated prices:
- consultation - from 500 UAH;
- primary treatment of 1 canal - from 4,000 UAH;
- retreatment of 1 canal - from 5,500 UAH;
- treatment under a microscope (1 canal) - from 4,000 UAH;
- canal unsealing - from 2,500 UAH.
The number of canals depends on the tooth: incisors usually have one, molars have two or three, sometimes more. The doctor gives the exact amount after an examination and an X-ray. The full price list is on the prices page.
How a microscope is better than conventional treatment
A dental microscope magnifies the working area up to 40 times, so the doctor sees what is invisible to the naked eye: thin additional canals, cracks and remnants of infection. This gives several advantages:
- more precise cleaning and less intervention in healthy tissues;
- a higher chance of saving a complex tooth instead of extracting it;
- retreatment is needed less often;
- quality control of the filling at every stage.
If a canal is not treated in time, the inflammation spreads to the tissues around the root and to neighbouring teeth. So do not delay your visit: read about the first signs in the article “Caries treatment: from first signs to a filling”, and about the treatment of caries itself on the caries treatment page.
