Braces for adults: what to know before 40

Many adults think orthodontic treatment is a story for teenagers. In fact, half of our patients in braces are people aged 30, 40 and 50. We explain whether it is too late to start, which systems suit adults and how much it costs in Irpin.

Can you get braces after 30 or 40

There is no age limit for braces. Teeth can be moved as long as the bone tissue around them is alive - and it stays alive for life. We treat patients at 40 and at 50. The only thing that matters is healthy teeth and gums before you start. That is why adult treatment is almost always preceded by mouth sanitation and professional hygiene.

What changes with age

Adults have denser bone than teenagers, so teeth move more slowly. There are often additional factors that children do not have:

• gum recession and exposed tooth necks;
• inflammatory gum disease and periodontitis;
• missing teeth and old prosthetic restorations;
• enamel wear and signs of bruxism.

These are not contraindications, but the treatment plan takes them into account. Sometimes the gums must be treated or a missing tooth restored with an implant before orthodontics.

Which systems suit adults

All the main systems are available to adults - the choice depends on the complexity of the bite, aesthetics and budget:

• metal - the most affordable and the fastest in complex cases;
• ceramic - blend with the colour of the teeth, far less noticeable;
• sapphire - transparent, almost invisible on the front teeth;
• self-ligating - without ligatures, fewer activation visits.

How long treatment takes for adults

Usually 12-24 months depending on the complexity of the case. In adults, because the bone is denser, treatment sometimes takes a little longer than in teenagers, but the result is just as stable. The orthodontist gives the exact term after 3D diagnostics, not “by eye”.

Preparation before braces

For treatment to be safe and free of complications, a few preparatory visits come first: treatment of caries and root canals, professional hygiene, and, if needed, gum treatment and CT diagnostics. This is not a formality: braces stay on for months, so it is better to resolve all hidden problems before you start.
