How long a filling lasts and when to replace it
30.08.2026 · 4 min read
A filling doesn't last forever. How long a modern composite filling serves, the signs it's time to replace it, and what extends its life.
Average lifespan
Composite (light-cured) fillings last 5–7 years. It depends on the filling size, hygiene, bruxism and the habit of chewing hard objects. Fillings on chewing teeth wear out faster.
Signs it's time to replace a filling
- the edges have darkened or a gap is visible between the filling and the tooth;
- the filled tooth has become sensitive to cold/sweet;
- the filling sits lower than neighbouring teeth — the tooth lost contact;
- food keeps getting stuck between the teeth.
How to make it last longer
Professional hygiene every 6 months, filling polishing, a night guard for bruxism, and not chewing nuts or pens. Our fillings come with a 2-year warranty: material defects are corrected at our expense.

No, the replacement is done under anesthesia and takes as long as a regular filling — 30–60 minutes.

A micro-gap lets bacteria in — decay develops under the filling unnoticed and often reaches the nerve.
