Sedation: dental treatment while you sleep
11.10.2026 · 7 min read
Sedation is dental treatment while you sleep: the patient is in a medicated sleep, breathes independently and does not remember the procedure. It is the option for those whose fear, pain or a large volume of work stands in the way of ordinary treatment.
We explain how sedation differs from general anaesthesia, who it suits, how to prepare safely and what to do after waking up.
What sedation is and how it differs from general anaesthesia
General anaesthesia uses sleep drugs, tracheal intubation and mechanical lung ventilation. Sedation uses only medication for medicated sleep: you breathe on your own, without intubation or a ventilator.
It is a controlled state maintained throughout by an anaesthesiologist. At Sorridi the anaesthetic support is provided by the AnestPro team: an anaesthesiologist and an anaesthetic nurse monitor your condition and vital signs from the start of the procedure until full recovery.
Who treatment while asleep suits
Sedation is appropriate in these cases:
- children who are afraid or refuse treatment;
- severe dental phobia and panic fear of the dentist;
- an increased gag reflex that prevents the dentist from working;
- a large volume of treatment - several procedures in one visit;
- patients with special needs.
The final decision is made by the anaesthesiologist after examination and history taking.
How an appointment with sedation goes
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Anaesthesiologist consultation | Examination, history taking, allergies and current medication |
| Preparation | Fasting and comfortable short-sleeved clothing |
| Induction of sedation | An intravenous catheter, a blood-pressure cuff, medicated sleep |
| Treatment | The dentist works while the anaesthesiologist monitors condition and readings |
| Waking up | The patient wakes up under supervision and the drowsiness gradually passes |
Preparation: fasting and clothing
You must not eat or drink before the procedure: this minimises the risk of stomach contents entering the airways. The exact fasting period is set by the anaesthesiologist - it is one of the main conditions of your safety.
Wear short-sleeved clothing. One arm will have a cuff for automatic blood-pressure measurement, the other an intravenous catheter. Tell the doctor about your medication, allergies and chronic conditions.
Is sedation safe and what are the possible effects
With proper preparation, a qualified team and modern equipment, sedation is a controlled process. The most common effect is drowsiness, which gradually passes.
The clinic is equipped with everything needed for emergency care. The anaesthesiologist continuously monitors your blood pressure, pulse and blood oxygen, so any change in your condition is noticed immediately.
After sedation: what not to do
- do not drive on the day of the procedure;
- arrive and travel back with a companion;
- rest at home until the drowsiness passes;
- do not make important decisions or sign documents that day;
- do not drink alcohol for 24 hours after sedation.
How often can sedation be performed
If the previous sedation passed without complications and there are no comorbidities, repeat procedures are possible even a few days apart. At the same time, the recommended safe interval between visits is 14 days.
