Self-ligating braces: are they worth the extra cost
22.10.2026 · 6 min read
Self-ligating braces differ from classic braces in how the archwire is attached. Instead of rubber rings, each bracket has a lid. We explain what this gives the patient and whether treatment really becomes faster.
How self-ligating braces are built
A bracket is a metal or ceramic plate with a slot. The orthodontic archwire that moves the teeth sits in the slot.
In a self-ligating system the slot is closed by its own lid. No ligature is needed.
The lid can be passive or active. In the active version it presses on the archwire and changes the force.
Brackets can be metal or ceramic. Metal is stronger, ceramic is less visible on the teeth.
The archwire passes through all brackets and sets the direction of movement. It is changed at visits, gradually increasing the stiffness.
The size of the bracket affects comfort. Smaller systems injure the lips and cheeks less often.
Ligatures and locks: what the difference is
In a classic system the archwire is held by rubber or metal ligatures. They are replaced periodically at visits.
A rubber ligature stretches over time and loses force. It also collects plaque and changes colour.
A self-ligating lock does not stretch. The force stays more stable between visits.
Ligatures are cheap, so the classic system is more affordable. But the cost of replacing elastics adds up throughout treatment.
Metal ligatures hold more firmly than rubber ones. They are stiffer and sometimes press on the gums.
A rubber ligature loses colour from coffee and food. This is noticeable on the front teeth.
| Criterion | Classic | Self-ligating |
|---|---|---|
| Archwire attachment | ligature | lock |
| Ligature replacement | at every visit | not needed |
| Hygiene | more difficult | simpler |
| Price per arch | from 15,000 UAH | from 19,000 UAH |
Advantages
- fewer parts that collect plaque;
- more stable archwire force between visits;
- simpler hygiene around the bracket;
- fewer replacements of consumable parts;
- a more comfortable feel for many patients.
Manufacturers claim less friction between the archwire and the slot. This may affect comfort, but it does not guarantee shorter treatment.
One practical point matters for the patient too: fewer elastics means fewer food stains and fewer reasons for unscheduled visits.
Limitations
- a higher price for the system;
- not always a shorter treatment time;
- the doctor needs experience with the specific system;
- hygiene is still essential;
- complex cases may need a combination of methods.
Self-ligating braces do not speed up the biology of tooth movement. The bone rebuilds at the same rate.
So promises of twice the speed should be checked. The term depends on the complexity of the bite.
Who they suit
The system is chosen for crowded teeth, gaps and bite problems. It suits both adults and teenagers.
Patients with sensitive gums often find it more comfortable to wear a design without rubber ligatures.
The aesthetic option is ceramic brackets. They are less visible but more expensive.
The orthodontist makes the final choice after diagnostics. Sometimes aligners are a better fit. The comparison is in the article braces or aligners.
When the system is not needed
Sometimes the problem is solved without braces. Mild crowding can be corrected with aligners or restorations.
If the patient is not ready to wear the appliance all the time, another method is better. Braces work only if the schedule is followed.
With active caries the teeth are treated first. Then orthodontic treatment starts.
Gum disease also needs stabilisation. Otherwise the load will worsen the condition of the tissues.
Age is not a barrier. Adults are treated successfully, but the term may be longer.
Braces prices in Irpin
| Service | Price |
|---|---|
| Consultation | from 500 UAH |
| Metal braces | from 15,000 UAH per arch |
| Ceramic braces | from 20,000 UAH per arch |

The full price list is on the prices page. The amount depends on the complexity of the bite and the number of visits.
X-rays and CT scans are not included. They are paid separately at diagnostics. Ask about this before treatment starts.
Removal of the system and retainers also cost money. It is better to plan the full budget at the consultation.
Ask whether an unscheduled visit for a detached bracket is included in the price. This is a common situation.
Timeline and adjustments
Treatment usually lasts 12-24 months. A complex bite takes more time.
Adjustments are done about every 6-8 weeks. At the visit the doctor changes the archwire or its position.
Missed visits lengthen treatment. Plan the schedule in advance.
After an adjustment there may be sensitivity to cold. It passes in a few days.
Soft food in the first days after fixation reduces discomfort. This applies to every adjustment too.
Allow time for the adjustment. Rushing prevents the doctor from checking the contacts.
What happens after braces are removed
After the system is removed the teeth do not stay in place by themselves. The bone around them is still rebuilding, so a retainer is needed. Without it the position can change within a few months.
A retainer can be removable or fixed. The doctor chooses the option based on the treatment result and the condition of the gums.
Removable retainers also need cleaning. They are washed separately from the teeth.
The retainer is worn according to the doctor's schedule. Skipping can return the teeth to their original position.
Hygiene with braces
- brush your teeth after every meal;
- use an interdental brush for the brackets;
- add floss or tape for the spaces between the teeth;
- avoid sticky and hard food;
- have professional hygiene more often.
Without hygiene, white spots appear around the brackets. This is early caries that remains after the system is removed.
During treatment it is worth carrying a travel toothbrush. Teeth also need cleaning after lunch away from home.
If a bracket comes off, do not glue it back yourself. Book an unscheduled visit, otherwise the archwire presses unevenly.
Do not bite ice or nuts. This is the most common cause of appliance breakage.
Do not hesitate to ask questions during the visit. A clear plan reduces anxiety.
The full cost of treatment is described in the article how much braces cost.

Frequently asked questions
Do self-ligating braces treat faster?
Yuliia Kunets
Orthodontist
Not always. They hold the archwire more stably, but the speed of tooth movement depends on the complexity of the bite.
Is it painful to wear such braces?
Yuliia Kunets
Orthodontist
After fixation and adjustments there may be discomfort for a few days. This is a normal reaction to pressure.
How much do self-ligating braces cost?
Yuliia Kunets
Orthodontist
From 19,000 UAH per arch. An adjustment costs 600 UAH, a consultation - from 500 UAH.
Can you eat everything?
Yuliia Kunets
Orthodontist
No. Hard and sticky food is best limited. It can detach a bracket or damage the archwire.
Are retainers needed after treatment?
Yuliia Kunets
Orthodontist
Yes. After braces are removed the teeth tend to shift back. A retainer preserves the result.
