Coloured ligatures on braces for kids

Orthodontic treatment takes months — and for a child how it looks matters. Colourful ligatures turn braces into a personal statement: the patient picks the colour, changes it at every visit and shows it to friends. Kids come in for activations much more willingly.

What coloured ligatures are

Ligatures are small elastic bands that hold the archwire in the bracket slots. In ligated bracket systems they do a working job — holding the archwire so the teeth move. And they are also the one “design element” a child picks to taste.

Unlike self-ligating systems (without bands), ligated braces give full colour freedom. The treatment is equally effective either way — the choice depends only on the system the orthodontist picks.

Which colours you can choose

The palette counts more than 20 shades. Children choose by mood, favourite colours or a football team. Here are examples from our chair:

Shaped ligatures — a kids’ favourite

Besides regular round bands there are shaped ones: fir trees, hearts, stars, snowflakes. At every activation the child picks a new collection — the motivation to come to visits is much higher.

Фігурні резинки трохи товщі за круглі і краще утримують дугу на передніх зубах, тому такий «дизайн» не шкодить лікуванню. Єдиний компроміс: чим складніша фігура, тим швидше вона псується з часом — особливо якщо дитина їсть багато твердого. Лікар підкаже реалістичний варіант на консультації.

А якщо дитина хоче непомітні брекети?

Це теж частий запит — особливо від підлітків і дорослих. Вихід: керамічні (білі) лігатури в тон емалі, що майже зливаються із зубами, або самолігуючі системи без резинок. Кольорові лігатури — добровільна опція, а не обов'язок: пацієнт може бути яскравим місяць, а наступним — спокійним.

How often the colour changes

Ligatures are a consumable: the orthodontist replaces them at every activation, every 4–6 weeks. So the colour can change almost monthly — for a holiday, a season or a mood.

Care: which foods stain the bands

• light shades (white, pale pink) darken from coffee, tea, turmeric and tomato sauce;
• bright colours (blue, green, purple, red) — keep their look with no restrictions;
• brushing after meals is standard braces hygiene — there are no separate rules for the bands.
